Today is the 75th anniversary of the Twenty-First Amendment to the United States Constitution by which alcohol prohibition was ended. It was a small spot of sanity at the start of a long mad rush to fatuity, and December 5th is coming to be known as Repeal Day.
Today is also the start of Hanukkah. If you follow the astronomical/rabbinic calendar, Hanukkah started at sunset yesterday. If you follow the literalist/Karaite calendar, then it starts at sunset today. (The new moon was not visible on the expected date, so the month started a day later.)
So here’s to Hanukkah!
