From your comments above, Jay, it may be that you have already read a bit of the thread on “another blog” (that I have come to think of as representing the “Church of Abounding Grace”).
But the level of vituperative rejection of ANY opposition to Pagan Tradition can really be something to behold.

(Yes, your comments are much nicer. I kicked the “dust off my feet” some time ago with respect to certain specific individuals; there is a point at which responses are pointless. But I know there are some Bereans still reading. No point in pulling punches…)

No doubt. I know people who were convicted about it and swore off Christmas trees and the whole shebang. Then they put up a Christmas tree. It really does go deep.

Going against this tradition is almost as unpopular as going against monogamy. This one is deeply entrenched into peoples souls.

Nicely done, Jay. I’ve been called a “killjoy” recently myself for pointing out the Jeremiah 10 thing…
(I still find it interesting that I know self-described “pagans” who seem more willing to discuss actual Scripture on the topic than many ‘evangelicals’ do, as if Some Traditions really ARE far more important than what the Word might say. No surprise, however.
I found myself chuckling at your ‘sheep in the fields’ footnote; I’ve wondered the same thing, even while thinking that the argument was at LEAST as persuasive as any I’ve ever heard in FAVOR of the December 25 birthday being shared with Sol Invictus Mithra.
What never ceases to bug me just a little, however, is the observation that many people who ignore Jeremiah (maybe because it’s “Old”) will REALLY get wrapped around the mistletoe about those “shepherds watching over their flocks by night”.
Maybe it’s the “Charlie Brown” effect…
