Yorktown Invested

From Diary of the American Revolution, Vol II.  Compiled by Frank Moore and published in 1859.

October 9.—The British in Yorktown and Gloucester, in Virginia, are now completely invested by land and water. The allied army, under his Excellency General Washington’s command, commenced operations against the enemy in those towns, on Thursday, the 27th ultimo, and we are assured that the French and American batteries were playing successfully against the enemy, on that and the three following days.1
